What Size Tent Do You Need? Tips to Help You Pick the Right Tent for Your Event

For many people, deciding what size tent they need is a challenge. It’s easy for people to underestimate their needs, especially if they’re trying to save money. We’re here to help.

Start with Guests and Tables

The first thing you need to know before you choose a tent is how many people you’ll be inviting and what size and style of tables you’ll be using.

Here’s what we mean. A typical round table measures 60 inches across and accommodates eight guests. You’ll need a space that measures 10 feet by 10 feet for the table and chairs to go with it. That works out to 100 square feet for every eight guests you invite.

If you’re using long tables, they take up slightly less space. You’ll need about 80 square feet for each eight guests. For an event with 150 guests, that would translate to 19 tables if we round up, or 1,900 square feet for round tables and 1,520 square feet for long tables.

Food Service

The next thing to consider is how you’ll be feeding your guests. If you’re planning to have servers deliver meals to the tables, you will need less space than you would if you were planning on a buffet table.

Likewise, providing a bar or drink station for your guests requires extra space, too. You’ll want to be sure that there’s enough room for guests to wait for their drinks and still be protected from hot sun or rain.

Dance Floor and Music

If you’re hosting an event that will feature music and dancing, you’ll need to provide space for both a dance floor and room for the band or DJ.

Standard dance floors measure 12’ by 12’, and we typically recommend leaving a 16’ by 16’ space to have some room around the dance floor, too. A DJ will take up less space than a full band.
